The original intentions of NEP was good, the execution benefited some but there are many still who fell through the loopholes and did not fare well.

I understand the anger of many of the non-Bumis when it comes to the NEP. Personally, I loathe it when JPA grants scholarships to children of the wealthy elite who could afford the tutoring that won them scads of As as well as the opportunity to shine in their extracurricular activities. These aren't the children who had to go home and take care of their younger siblings, settle chores, help their parents at the market etc to whom education is one of the few avenues for them to raise their family above poverty or even "cukup makan".

*sigh*Snuzehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09712374144317934980noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1171109115213682080.post-38836505646126276342011-07-26T14:54:30.983+08:002011-07-26T14:54:30.983+08:00AS non-bumi, I agree that NEP affirmative action i...AS non-bumi, I agree that NEP affirmative action is necessary to help the poor but I also would like to see a time -line to wean-off from those privileges, the reason i say this is bcos , while it help them to compete locally, we are facing competition from outside world and they dont give a hoot abt special privileges. Therefore we need to compete locally and internationally.Sooner or later, I think it come a time, the malays are able walk proud that they can compete on equal term with others.

FYI, the minority blacks in US also have affirmative action but somehow after so many years, this ethnic group still lack behind other groups or even recent immigrants like the korean.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1171109115213682080.post-58432106628247033682011-07-26T13:57:14.775+08:002011-07-26T13:57:14.775+08:00I would like to share my experience about the NEP ...I would like to share my experience about the NEP .I start my life working life in the early 70's after finishing my Cambridge School Certificate. I join the PWD as a junior staff and work on project site supervising construction project.I was sent to work on site on the outskirt of town and in some rural areas where the norm of transport was by river in Sarawak.I as a young man make friend with the locals- Iban , Melanau, Melayu. The irony was that I can only converse in English and some chinese dialects as a product of the English medium school. So I learn to speak Iban and Melayu so as to be able to communicate better.During the school holidays a few of the Iban boy follow me back to town so I can threat them after payday. The first thing to hit me was that, they were following me like a brook of chicken follwing the mother hen. Each time a vechile pass us they would literally speaking jump! They also have great difficulty when crossing road my my my total disorientation! From a rural sorrounding of tranqulity to an urban choas in Sibu town.To cut the story short I met them a short while ago. Some have gone on to become 3 cars owner, some join the civil services ,some become awesome heavy machine operators. Some go back to their longhouses and build houses or biliks putting shame to the chicken coup we are living in now.The NEP has definitely improve their lot and as for me I am the proud owner of a 20 years Proton Iswara with 4 kids still in school.I felt the NEP has fail me as a non-bumi.I dont feel any benefit as a man on the street as I only see the rich getting richer irrespective of race or religious belief.Giving back to society I think that,s the exception rather than the norm.Basically human are selfish and Malaysian are no exception and if I do not remember wrongly the Holy Prophet (PBUM) says- Beware if you are bestow wealth the Devil will try to make you a Miser.Thank you for letting me share my views on your blog.Jakaria Jeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15026273669651439668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1171109115213682080.post-81814896527642835062011-07-26T11:29:28.478+08:002011-07-26T11:29:28.478+08:00Anas,
Well-written and easy to read. Some issues ...Anas,

Well-written and easy to read. Some issues that I have :

(a) Among the bumiputras themselves, there have also been differences in the way people have been assisted under the NEP. The bumiputras in Sabah and Sarawak as well as the Orang Asli have got a shoddier deals than the Malays in Peninsula. There overwhelmingly Malay civil service is often not senstive to the other Bumiputras.

(b) We need to improve the transperancy of data with regards to the NEP target. The government can claim any figure has been achieved or not achieved but many people are unconvinced because they do not trust that data. The government has never been transparent about the data.

(c) Urban poor vs rural poor. In general, the urban poor tend to be better off than the rural poor. This is why cities keep attracting the poor. This is a global phenomenon. You should read the recently published "Triumph of the Cities" by Edward Glaeser that explains this very well.

I completely agree with you that NEP has improved the lives of millions of people in this country. Now, if only we can eliminate the abuses ....Monyet Kinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16729429758270472563noreply@blogger.com
