Many Malaysians have debated about the social contract. Some say it exist, while others don’t. Some are for it, some against.
But what is the social contract? Where is it? Does it really exist? Whether it exist or not, why not we come out with one?
So, here are my thoughts. You can agree with my ideas, comment about them or simply agree to disagree.
But, please use logic, love and wisdom.
Because,
Logic will make us fair with our minds;
Love will make us fair with our hearts; and,
Wisdom will lead us to combine our love and logic in the way of God and for the benefit of Mankind.
Thank you, cheers and peace,

Have a meaningful Wesak
“Do something for others.” Venerable Dr. K. Sri Dhammananda ( 1918-2006)
What Malaysians Want:
A Social Contract
We want a Social Contract that ...
I) Sees wrong as wrong and right as right, no matter who did it.
II) No individual or community is left behind regardless of race or geography.
III) We work towards zero poverty – it’s superfluous to have skyscrapers and state of the art structures when there are Malaysians who do not have a place to call home.
IV) Recognizes the Malay and indigenous customs form the core culture while the Chinese, Indian and other cultures play strong supportive roles to make our nation a unique and exciting brand.
V) All Malaysian children receive a first rate education, every child is supported and encouraged to achieve his or her maximum potential.
VI) Encourages us to practice sustainable development without corruption.
VII) Allows us learn and appreciate our own religion while at the same time encourages us to understand the religions practiced by our fellow Malaysians.
VIII) We help each other in business and transfer knowledge and skills from one community to another.
IX) Treats non-Malaysians serving in our nation, Bangladeshis or Europeans; with equality, respect and dignity.
X) Does not introduce racism and division to our children at school or at home.
XI) We provide adequate health care for all.
XII) We look at our constitution as a whole and not pick and choose out of context to suit an argument.
XIII) Do unto your Malaysian brothers and sisters as you would like them do unto you.
XIV) Acknowledges that we are Many Colors, but One Race, Bangsa Malaysia.

ReplyDeleteXIV) We are Many Colors, but One Race, Bangsa Malaysia.Am putting the post on my blog. Thanks a lot for the posting!
I'm in, where do I pen my signature?
ReplyDeleteMay I add? :-D
- Work towards zero racism. Stop looking back with discontent instead, start looking forward towards building a true ONE MALAYSIA. (Vendettas can only be ended by forgiving and forgetting)
- Can I alter IX to,(oh, you can ignore this ); "We treat Malaysians, and Bangladeshis etc serving in our nation like how we treat the Europeans; with utmost respect and dignity. ( to the point of kissing ass. It's true, try walking into a hotel alongside a Mat Salleh. You simply don't exist!!!)
Thank you, and thank you for wishing for Bangsa Malaysia.
ReplyDeleteI wish to add.
There is only one nation named "Malaysia". Her nationals are Malaysians whose mother tongue is Bahasa Kebangsaan. A true Malaysian embraces the Rukun Negara and the Perlembagaan Negara and live their lives by these two.
It is not just by merely holding a myKAD but having foreign motherland at heart and conversing in foreign mother tounge languages in this Tanah Air tercinta.
Language is the cornerstone of nation building and COMMON LANGUAGE is the key to unity.
If this is our country, then do spend some 20 minutes. Hold our breath and read this:-
Racial Polarisation by KijangMas.
Then, swallow our pride, look hard in the mirror and ask ourselves / yourself:-
"Am I Malaysian?"
"Are we Malaysians?"

ReplyDeleteBacking you bro.. all the way to a better Malaysia tomorrow..
ReplyDeletePARDON ME FOR MY TYPO ERROR!
ReplyDeleteANYWAY, LET'S START ONE SCHOOL FIRST! THEN ONE TABLE, THEN ONE MALAYSIA!
BAHASA MALAYSIA - LET'S BE HONEST, HOW MANY OF US CAN SPEAK A PROPER BAHASA MALAYSIA?
HOW WILL YOU LOVE A COUNTRY WHEN YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO COMMUNICATE PROPERLY IN BAHASA MALAYSIA!
SOMETIMES I SEE, EVE A BANGLA, BURMESE AND NEPALI CAN SPEAK BETTER BAHASA MALAYSIA THAN US THE 'MALAYSIAN'
AM I RIGHT?
"IV) Recognizes the Malay and indigenous customs form the core culture while the Chinese, Indian and other cultures play strong supportive roles to make our nation a unique and exciting brand."
ReplyDeleteIsn't that already a given and, really, no one thinks otherwise. But there are some agitators who seem to think that they can assume the worst and in calling for such things as "Unity" for their sub-sets, impute in that call the assumption that their positions are being threatened by competing forces when none exist. The various calls for unity in recent times appear to me so worrying as I am yet to see one that calls for the unity of all Malaysians. Except maybe, the new Prime Minister's call for 1 Malaysia.
The so called "social contract" the politicians refer to which they assume to be so sacrosanct that any violation of it or objection to it would tantamount to subversion or something is ridiculus in every sense of the word. What ever it is that was "agreed" to be the social contract was at a time when the assumptions held then by the parties to the contract about their own cultures, races, habits, norms and lifestyles, DO NOT exist today. Mos tof the assumptions held to be valid then are most definitely invalid today. Cheng Lock would never have eaten a thosai nor even known what thosai looked like. Sambathan would not have used a pair of chop stick to eat ever. And Tunku would never have thought that Malays would be eating in places such as Soul'd Out. But today you never can tell if your next meal is going to be Chinese, Indian or Malay and for many of us there is indiffference over which might be preferable.
Yes, I agree with your proposal. But maybe you ought to add one more. Lets dump the "social contract" that brought about Merdeka to the dumpster where it belongs. Looking through the kelidescope which is the social contract that you have laid out may shock a lot of politicians who depend on the old assumptions to plead their right of place in the political mess of their creation.
This is something I would like to share with all friends. When I first went into Lim Kit Siang's blog (blog.limkitsiang.com), the first thing I read is him calling Mukhriz (Jerlun MP) and Tan Keng Liang (gerakan kedah youth chief) as people "lack of grey matters" and silly. That was about 2 weeks ago. Today, I read that he said "the IQ of the Health Minister, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who is MCA Vice President and Penang MCA State chief, is highly suspect when he could not understand simple English". The problem is that the more Lim Kit Siang branding that he is smarter than the rest of the people in the world (which I don't belief), the more people will just see him as a person barking on the wrong tree. I support DAP but I wish that our party's chairman can be more polite when addressing other leaders (whether they are Barisan or Pakatan). Otherwise, this will set bad example to the new generation of Malaysians.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, but I think my comment above regarding "...holding a myKAD but having foreign motherland at heart..." does not sound well.
ReplyDeleteWhat I meant to say is that:-
By just merely holding a myKAD but having foreign motherland at heart and conversing in foreign mother tounge languages in this Tanah Air tercinta, will make one question your true identity. There is doubt whether you are really Anak Bangsa Malaysia.
Maybe my many years ago experience would make it clearer:-
In an American university, I was having conversation with my Malay colleague when an American friend came to join us. The first thing he said was:-
"This is America. Please speak American!"
The same American friend also, asked me once, as he pointed his finger to my Malaysian colleague:-
"He is Malaysian right? But why he said he is Chinese?"

Salam Anas,
ReplyDeleteI like this,
"X) Does not introduce racism and division to our children at school or at home."
I am a Chinese, but I think, THE VERNACULAR SCHOOL SYSTEM HAS TO GO. This is the disease. It has to be treated now.
Children of different backgrounds should be in one school, using one language. Please go to deminegara.blogspot.com for more details. We need to instil the love amongst Malaysians of various colours and creeds from young and having a common language can do that (as had been proven in other countries). Malaysians should be able to speak fluent and proper Bahasa Malaysia not à la someone who had just arrived from China or Tamil Nadu.
It was a sad experience for me in London whereby I met a Malaysian Chinese girl who could speak only in Cantonese, rudimentary English and NO Bahasa Malaysia!! I thought she came from Hong Kong at first......Well, after that I realised that she was the product of the SJK (C) in M'sia ......
Sad, sad....Orang Malaysia tapi tak tahu cakap Bahasa Malaysia...
Dear Anas,
ReplyDeleteVery well said & very noble of you to do your bit to propose a Social Contract this Wesak Day(May 9th)".
God Almighty “Hears & Feels” the Call, the Pain & the Despair of our “Defenders” & the downtrodden rayaat.
To use JFK's Famous words:
And so, my fellow Anak Bangsa Malaysia.....
Ask not what your country can do for you
Rather ask what you can do for your country.
My fellow citizens of Malaysia:
Ask not what Malaysia will do for you,
Rather what together we can do for the freedom of Man...
Let us all SHIFT our “Ketuanan, Racial, Religious, Personal, Selfish, etc Paradigm” and start thinking about “OUR GREAT NATION MALAYSIA for ANAK BANGSA MALAYSIA”
As with the original “VALUES” which our Bapak Merdeka/Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra together with his first cabinet of True Malaysian TUANS adopted - From TOP to BOTTOM.
Let us ALL also learn that Tunku & his Malaysian cabinet of HONOURABLE, ESTABLISHED TRUE TUANS, EARNED the RESPECT, TRUST & SUPPORT of ALL the Malayan citizens.
Malaysia badly needs “Role Model” established Leaders & Politicians of HONOUR with Calibre, Maturity & Tolerance without Fear or Favour on Both sides of the Political Divide.
Further, this nation Desperately needs Intelligent, Time Proven Pragmatic Successful modelled, Financial & Politiical “SOLUTIONS” on Both sides of the Political Divide NOW, to mitigate the IMPENDING Political & Financial fallout.
Every new day will be another “New Devine Revelation” to reveal the “Truth”....
Finally, whatever the verdict will determine where he stand on this quotation:
“The Mediocre leader Tells,
The Good leader Explains,
The Superior leader Demonstrates,
The Great leader Inspires”
The saying goes, “Whatever goes
round, will come round”.
This is the law of nature.
One must always be MAGNANIMOUS in VICTORY....
TWO WRONGS DO NOT MAKE ONE RIGHT....
This great nation & its rayaat NOW have “God Almighty’s ONE LAST CHANCE to “Repent & Correct itself” from their GREEDY Worldly Industrialised Materialistic PURSUITS…
- To go back to God Almighty’s BASICS WISDOM & GIFT.....
- “This GOD ALMIGHTY’S UNIVERSE of PLENTY has ENOUGH for EVERYONE’S NEEDS BUT NOT EVERYONE’S GREED!”
- We are all concerned "Anak Bangsa Malaysia" seeking the "Truth" to restore Justice, Equality, Human Rights & Freedom,
- "Malaysia for Malaysians" where every citizen can "Share & Dream" about, "Be given the Opportunity" to work hard towards that "Dream",
- For our young, our children & grandchildren - "To Achieve" that "Malaysian Dream"....
- through our own "Blood, Sweat, Tears, Intelligence & Wisdom"
- To be a self made/achieved "Anak Bangsa Malaysia"!
Maybe it takes someone WITHOUT any name, without any position, without any past attachment, no political baggage,
Someone only WITH the sincerest interest to right a wrong, being guided by the Almighty,
having the unseens praying for him as they too are concerned of this state of affair of this blessed nation....
Maybe the time has not been so near yet....for such ‘event’ to happen.
Yes, many Chosen Situational Leaders will evolve in the process from amongst the Rayaat....
Followed by God Almighty’s “Anointed” Phoenix…
A True & Wise, Humble but Firm Leader for Malaysia will arise like a “Phoenix” from amongst “the Downtrodden Rayaat....Insha Allah!
All our prayers to God Almighty seeking “Sanity, Truth, Justice, Equality & Freedom” will be answered.
Cheers.
Hi Anas... guess I don't have to buy a STAR tomorrow after all...:) It's a contract that I will willingly put my thumbprint on, THANKS!!
ReplyDeleteTo some other comments, just to share my 2-cents worth: I don't believe getting rid of vernacular schools and making a race that speaks only 1 language can cure the disease of disunity in this country. Look at Indonesia in the past 2-3 decades. They have created a generation that speaks 1 language and use only Indon names... yet have they been united? Has anyone forgotten the racial massacre in the 97-98? Ironically, it was after that, with a more liberal and inclusive government coming into light that we see a much more peaceful and democratic country emerging.
Education is the core to nation building and we have to acknowledge that vernacular schools have also contributed largely to producing quality citizens. Language is only the medium of communication. It is the content of the education that counts!
I grew up in vernacular school and I can speak proper Malay. So are my fellow schoolmates. And we were all taught patriotic values throughout our education as well! We once tried for a long time to sign up for Rakan Muda membership and to participate in some of the programs but there was a total rejection...
Tell me please, between a bunch of mat rempit that speaks only 1 language and Malaysians who speak multiple languages and work hard to earn a good living, who is more threatening to national unity?
You see, we have to acknowledge that our biggest problem lies in it's most core policies and the implementations, and until that is rectified, there is no other cure.
Why see only our differences? As Anak Bangsa Malaysia, we have more common interests to fight for than to exploit on communal differences which are after all superficial.
Well Anas, this would be something that I support.
ReplyDeleteAs for NJ & Parpu, stop trying to hijack this effort to press your own narrow minded racialist beliefs disguised as Bangsa Malaysia. Rubbish packed in a nice fancy wrapper still smells & looks like rubbish.
To be a Malaysian, you must accept the Rukun Negara and the Perlembagaan.
ReplyDeleteIf these two are not of your taste, that you are very welcomed to find other countries that have the Rukun and Constitution that suit your taste.
Now, not every single Malaysian live their lives strictly to the Rukun Negara and the Perlembagaan all the time.
Thus there are Mat Rempits as well as there are Football bookies, Illegal VCDs producers and many-many more to count that brings great shame to the Nation.
But each Malaysian is striving to achieve "SATU BANGSA, SATU NEGARA, SATU BAHASA" Demi Negara...Read and judge for yourself what have Vernacular schools have done to the unity of this country.
Salam sejahtera,

Dear Anas,
ReplyDeleteThis social contract is what u, me and the rakyat (a majority at least) want. But is it what our leaders want? They seem to preach it but not practise it. Let's hope & pray they see the light this Wesak Day!
God bless you & all Anak Bangsa Malaysia.

KAMI TAK NAK LAGI ADA PERBEZAAN SEKOLAH, KAMI NAK SATU SEKOLAH!

ReplyDeletehttp://blog.jacksonlim.com/?p=110
Anas,
ReplyDeleteIt is all fine & agreeable.
However, I think that word "race" is unnecessary and would invite debate about the word and evoke a siege mindset among "you know who"....
"Bangsa" here should denote "Nation" and not "ethnicity".
It should be replaced with "One Nation" - Bangsa Malaysia.
Nevertheless - good thoughts indeed.
Points 1,2 and 3 make good human sense. But, point 3 is confusing. Customs are forms or reflections of culture. The core or basis of culture is human value which is universal and not culture-specific. Customs are not the core cultures. Customs are good for each individual groups. If we are interested in One human Race, then we need to focus on the inner human values and not on the external trappings of culture.
ReplyDeleteAlso, human values do not make the distinction of whether Malay culture is the core while other cultures are supportive and on the margins. There is no hierachy of cultural values. If so, then biasness and prejudices can be nurtured readily.
If your One Race does not mean one Human Race, but the Malay race, then we are talking of different issues.
The social contract propounded by Rousseau is a double-edged sword. His ideas contain seeds of authoritarianism. So, again, we need to clarify these strands of thoughts as the human mind is the fore-runners of human behaviour.
Focus on inner human values. Not on the external forms.
Dear Anas,

thanks for your time.I appreciate it.This is for the "X" generation of the neXt generation.
anak hasil bumi malaysia
Well caught Bright Eyes, I was almost taken in by those two.
ReplyDeleteNJ: "If these two are not of your taste, that you are very welcomed to find other countries that have the Rukun and Constitution that suit your taste."
The same old "balik tongsan" canard again.
Even when they try to push their fascist agenda under cover of something good, the racist ends up showing his true colors.
“Ye shall know them by their fruits.” Go to deminegara blog & you will see the extent of their racist attitude.
Anas, all the best to you, I'll join you in promoting the true anak bangsa malaysia, not NJ & parpu's "ketuanan UMNO" in disguise.
I have this to say:-
ReplyDeleteI have let go "Semenanjung Tanah Melayu to embrace "Malaysia".
Why should I let go "Tanah Melayu"?
I let go for people who are Malaysian, truly Malaysian. Not just by merely claiming so and hold myKAD but their heart and soul are firmly attached to foreign motherland.
Who are these people?
The people who let go "Tanah Melayu", the people who let go "Malaysia Timur Sabah & Sarawak" and the people who are of equal standing as demonstrated by En. Fred Li above, V.T. Sambanthan & Tan Siew Sin (scroll down this blog entry here and read their speech)and many more.
I dream of one day, that En. Fred Li and I, will have a myKAD which read, "Nationality = Malaysian", no race and not even religion indicated therein. That day me and En. Fred Li are the bumiputras of this beloved Land.
But for me and En. Fred Li to be the bumiputra on this Land, we have yet this obstacle. We have people who live here claiming to be Malaysian, but their heart is in the faraway foreign land. They speak foreign language, they write foreign language and they even insisted they have all the rights to have their own mother tongue schools which "divide" rather than "unite" at the very tender age.
So, when we call for unity for Malaysia, these people shout to the world that we are racist, facist or whatever. We are calling for all to mix and unite in ONE SCHOOL, yet they insist on separate ways of vernacular school. Think for yourself, where else in the world that allow such thing to happen.
Wherever you go in this world, whichever house you enter, THERE ARE HOUSE RULES.
The house rule for Malaysia is, its Rukun Negara and The Perlembagaan.
Salam sejahtera,
"SATU BANGSA, SATU NEGARA, SATU BAHASA"
NJ
Malaysia needs diversity and identity and co-exist. no indonesian style intergration that u suggest. its still the spiritula home of malays and u cant deny the social contract that our forefathers set out. U want us to be a republic like singapore? See how Malays live there like 3rd class citizens. Jangan jual bangsa lah you hippy.
ReplyDeleteIV) Recognizes the Malay and indigenous customs form the core culture while the Chinese, Indian and other cultures play strong supportive roles to make our nation a unique and exciting brand.
ReplyDeleteWhy do we still speak of race in this day and age? Truly disappointing. There is only one shared culture, Malaysian culture. As long as we continue to divide things along racial lines, then 1Malaysia will never come to be. Let us not talk of Malay, Chinese, Indian, etc. We are all Malaysians. And the majority of us want a 1Malaysia based on meritocracy that provides equal opportunity to all, regardless of race. So let us stop talking about race and special rights, and focus on BornMalaysian.
For those who has "Malaysia" in his/her heart. A true Malaysian will give his/her support and sign the petition:-
ReplyDeleteTowards "SATU BANGSA, SATU NEGARA, SATU BAHASA"Salam sejahtera,
NJ
We can start off with EDUCATION..'One School, One Language' concept is a good start..but ultimately, the QUALITY of education is the most important consideration..So my suggestion is that we INCORPORATE 'One School, One Language' concept WITH other values and contents coming from vernacular school system. Example:
ReplyDelete1)Bahasa Malaysia will of course be the medium of the 'One School'. Introduce other language-based subjects such as Mandarin (or Cantonese) and Tamil as either core or elective subjects. The earlier we start, the better since children tend to pick up languages easily. In the future, we can truly see Malays, Chinese, Indians that can choose to either speak in Malay, Chinese or Indian language...That would be something unique...
2)Conduct feasible studies on the current set of school systems and compare both sets of schools (Sekolah Kebangsaan vs Sekolah Vernakular). Extract any good values or contents from both set of schools and incorporate them in 'One School'
3)Introduce subjects that help us understand each other such as 'Interfaith' subject whereby students learn about each other's religion and its values PLUS 'Interculture' subject whereby students learn about each other's culture and its values
Basically, we need to revamp the whole education system to inculcate 'Social Contract' and thus giving birth to a truly harmonious multicultural Malaysians..
Anas,
ReplyDeleteI would like to hear your views of assimilation of diverse cultures and languages that would create a unique Malaysian culture and language.
I have heard of many cases of assimilation of cultures in an inter -racial marriage or even when one converts religion.
It's a matter of time when Malaysians will no longer be pure breeds categorised as malay, chinese, indian and etc.
Even our national language will become Manglish or whatever we want to call it one day as it evolves, campur aduk with Bahasa Melayu, English, Tamil and other dialects.Don't believe check out those malays and non malays that speaks fluently amongst themselves in english and malay with a sprinkling of other languages. Our Bahasa Kebangsaan prominent role would be in the exam halls mostly .
:)
ReplyDeleteI read your 'Social Contract' with a glimpse of hope that one day my children will see and understand what I'm trying to educate them.
To me, we are still who we are - Malaysians; but Malays, Chinese, Indians and many more Malaysians...
To me, I believe in integrating, not assimilating...
Malaysia's unique in it's own way, we can live in harmony with what we have minus it being politicized.
Kenapa perlu sama sedangkan ternyata kita berbeza?
I am not a product of Kursus Bina Negara nor the lackadaisical Malaysian...
I am a hopeful Malaysian Chinese who simply respect my fellow Malaysians.
