JAN 24 – To Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah, this is what I have to say in response to your statement about emigration by ingrates.
Sometime in 1980, when I was a final-year student in London, I had a very short telephone conversation with my father. In those days, there were no call cards, skype or the like and international phone calls were expensive. He had a very simple message – “Don’t come home, son.”

ReplyDeleteAbout Rice
1. Rice
To overcome the shortage of rice that make it necessary for the country to import 60% of our rice consumption, I have prepared a very brief proposal which I think would benefit our country in the long term.
The catalyst to the world rice shortage was when Australia closed down all their rice fields especially their biggest ricefield located at the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area in Griffith, New South Wales, Australia (MIA) after a very long drought and they decided that, for monetary reasons, they needed the water more for their vineyards than for their ricefields. (See:http://www.mirrigation.com.au/). I visited that remote city during my student days in 1973 and stayed there for about a week and to illustrate how big that ricefield was is when I took a look from the southern side of the ricefield, I saw the ricefield extend towards the horizon on the northern side and likewise, when I took a look from the eastern side I saw the ricefield extend towards the horizon on the western side, very very massive and very very flat. The ricefield was very clean, neat and tidy and a joy to look at and there was not a single soul there, only machines. If anyone does visit Griffith in the future and check their 1973 visitor's book, if the authorities there still have it, one would find my name there in their register.
Singapore neither have the land nor the expertise but they have an idea, a lot of initiative and some money and are able to turn that into something very useful and profitable.
Briefly, the idea is to plant rice at all 'tanah terbiar' in this country including Sabah & Sarawak.
Strain: To be developed and one that will have better commercial value so that it can be exported besides selling them for local consumption.
Status of land: Owners', state land, contract, rental or lease.
Planting and Irrigation Method: Modern, effective, environmental friendly and fully mechanised.
Produce: For local consumption and export.
R & D: To appoint scientist and researchers to come out with the new strain suitable for this country and can be harvested at least twice a year.
Management & Planning: Professional and at national level and a very thorough research and detailed planning required.
Financing: Government Grants, World Bank loan, Interest and tax-free loans, attractive loans.
Marketing & Distribution: Set up a new national commercial body to market and distribute the produce BUT NOT BERNAS.
I attach here some useful references for you to look at and I do have more information on this.
I hope you would consider this suggestion seriously. However, if you wish to hear more about my suggestion above, please send your people to see me.
The above proposal, if implemented properly and successfully, will create plenty of jobs, among others.
Anyone with the interest, commitment, influence and connections should take it up and make it a reality.
Best regards.

ReplyDeleteAbout the Malaysian Post Offices
Further Commercialisation of Post Offices in Malaysia by PMB to add value to the group.
Below is a copy of the suggestion I sent to the new PMB CEO:
Here's a small suggestion to further commercialise Pos Malaysia Bhd by an ordinary Malaysian:
Besides providing all the current services, make all post offices throughout the country a 24-hr service centre and a 24-hr convenient store selling reasonably priced consumer goods to all. This is possible because all the major costs are already factored in and you can compete with prices offered by Giant Hypermarket, for example. Definitely, prices of goods to be sold here will be cheaper than
7/11s.
To add further, if this project is to be more successful in its implementation, privatise it just like what is being done in franchising schemes or whatever term you want to use for this type of scheme, like Petronas Service Stations, for example.
The above proposals, if implemented properly and successfully, will create plenty of jobs, among others.
Anyone with the interest, commitment, influence and connections should take up the above suggestions and make them a reality.
