Hokkien is my second language - An Interview with The Nut Graph

"Look, I think it is not technically wrong to say that the Chinese and Indians were pendatang in the past. But that was before 1957. We cannot call the current batch of non-Malay [Malaysians] pendatang. This is their home. How can you call them pendatang? Gila? It's spiteful...."

  2. Why is there a need to use terms like 'Bumiputera', 'ketuanan Melayu' & 'pendatang' to segregate people? It's so elitist & discriminative!

After nearly 53 years of independence we're all Malaysian citizens with equal rights. There's no need to use the term bumiputera with special rights. As long as you use this discriminatory term, there'll be no unity.

We're a unique country made up of people of different cultures due to history, so there's no need to have a core or dominant Malay culture. Let the different cultures integrate naturally, do not impose.

In today's world, people are going borderless & global, let's stop being so small & narrow-minded insisting on special privileges for one race. This is really shortsighted and foolish. Unless we change, M'sia will never be a great country.

You are right in many ways but wrong in many things. It is sad that a Mamak from Penang Ahmad Ismail use the term of pendatang to the non malays, the truth of the matter is once we achieve independence pendatang cease to exist. We are all malaysians although we are different. I am from free school too, your senior. Were you the same batch with Radhi khalid? Beside the hostel is a government quarters that was where we stay until 1979! So wish you good luck and all the best!

  4. Anas,

You are absolutely wrong to call us pendatang. I abhor your comment that it is alright to call us pendatang. You are YEMENI and not MALAY. As my grand father was from CHINA. Moreover my familes have been here earlier than yours. How about the Peranakan from Malacca and Penang. As a Malaccan, I know that the Nyonas and the Babas are more Malaysian than yo will ever be. What right do you have to call us pendatang? And the socalled KETUANAN MELAYU. This is just APARTHEID. It looks to me on scratching the surface of ANAS, I find a RACIST.
