PETALING JAYA: For designers Tintoy Chuo, Arif Rafhan and Faros Amzas, the opportunity to “Say Something Nice” on a T-shirt was too good to pass up.
#TeeSomethingNice is a spin-off of the “Say Something Nice” campaign started by Zubedy (M) Sdn Bhd and supported by Yayasan 1Malaysia, aimed at showcasing "the best side of Malaysia” during the 17-day period between Aug 31 to Sept 16 (from Merdeka Day till Malaysia Day).
The spin-off project is a fun undertaking which sources cool T-shirt designs from local designers.
Organised by Malaysian animator Hasnul Hadi Samsudin (who worked on Oscar-winning movie Life of Pi) and Shamsul Jafni Shafie, #TeeSomethingNice received 43 designs during the contest period.
Eventually, Tintoy, Arif and Faros emerged triumphant.
Arif, 36, is into minimalist art.
His winning design is called “Multiplayer”, which depicts 8-bit style Muhibbah characters including a woman in a saree and a man in baju Melayu.
He said he hoped his design would “strip away all the -isms” and show that regardless of racial, religious and cultural differences, Malaysians were one united group of people.
Faros, 31, on the other hand, went for a cheekier design that might take casual onlookers a few moments to decipher – 14 brightly-coloured stripes and the word “TANAHAIRKU” emblazoned across the chest.
Each stripe represents a different state flag.
Tintoy, who runs the ActionTintoy design laboratory, took the iconic image of Malaysia’s Bapa Kemerdekaan, Tunku Abdul Rahman, and jazzed it up with the colours of the Jalur Gemilang.
Tunku’s hand is raised in a salute. A speech bubble telling Malaysians to “say something nice!” completes the picture.
Tintoy, 41, wanted an icon that was meaningful.
The T-shirts can be acquired by contributing to the #TeeSomethingNice pitchIN page at http://pitchin.my/project/24.
