Prof Dr Md Dan Md Palil of UTeM may seem like an
ordinary academician. But he has in fact, pioneered a breakthrough in the body
armour industry. With a mix of our local coconut fibres, Kevlar, and glass; he
has produced cheaper and lighter body armour that is just as effective as
ordinary Kevlar vests.
Weighing at 3kg and costing only RM2,000 (as opposed
to the usual 8kg and RM16,000 vests), the coconut body armour is able to stop
9mm calibre bullets at a mere 5 metre range as tested by the Defence Science
and Technology Research Institute.
Not only that, this innovation won
the gold award at the 35th Geneva International Exhibitions of Inventions, New
Techniques and Products.
IIUM, another Malaysian institution, has also come up
with an ingenious innovation and this may potentially revolutionise cancer
treatment in the future.
The
development of the personalised MEMS biosensor will provide doctors with a
mechanism to determine the amount of cancer cells more accurately. Gauged at
two points, before and after the chemotherapy treatment, this cell counting
technology allows doctors to better select the amount of drugs needed to treat
a patient.
This
personalized MEMS biosensor is the first step in offering a technologically
advanced, higher-quality and more comfortable medical treatment for the ailing
cancer patients.
We are blessed here in Malaysia with the existence of
these amazing people with their brilliant minds and their beneficial
innovations.
And I say, this is one of the nice things we Malaysians
enjoy.
