What does the Quran say about CRITICAL THINKING?

Critical thinking is the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form good judgement. It is man making full use of reason. The goal of critical thinking is to improve the quality of thinking.

Critical thinking is enormously important because it is self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored and self-corrective. The Quran say a lot about critical thinking. It is a religious duty to practice critical thinking. The Quran’s emphasis on reason is clear cut and a matter of fact!

There are many verses on the subject, as like the previous post, I will share about 10 in this entry. All emphasis are mine to help readers focus on a particular message.

1.    Who listen to speech and follow the best of it. Those are the ones Allah has guided, and those are people of understanding. - Quran 39:18

2.    Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason. - Quran 8:22

3.    And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned. - Quran 17:36

4.    Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you]." There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed, in that is a sign for a people who give thought. Quran 16:69

5.    Do they not contemplate within themselves? Allah has not created the heavens and the earth and what is between them except in truth and for a specified term. And indeed, many of the people, in [the matter of] the meeting with their Lord, are disbelievers. Quran 30:8

6.    Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allah has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and the earth are signs for a people who use reason.– Quran 2:164

7.    So, have they not traveled through the earth and have hearts by which to reason and ears by which to hear? For indeed, it is not eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts. Quran 22:46

8.    And within the land are neighboring plots and gardens of grapevines and crops and palm trees, [growing] several from a root or otherwise, watered with one water; but We make some of them exceed others in [quality of] fruit. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who reason. - Quran 13:4

9.    And He has subjected for you the night and day and the sun and moon, and the stars are subjected by His command. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who reason. - Quran 16:12

10. And it is not for a soul to believe except by permission of Allah , and He will place defilement upon those who will not use reason. – Quran 10:100
