Thank you to the 1647 respondents who shared their choices during the Phase – 2 Survey.

The top 7 candidates who made it to the final phase are (in alphabetical order) ANTHONY LOKE, HISHAMUDIN HUSSEIN, KHAIRY JAMALUDDIN ABU BAKAR, MOHAMAD HASAN, NURUL IZZAH ANWAR, RAFIZI RAMLI and SHAFIE APDAL.

I am glad that we included RAFIZI RAMLI in the second survey as the prediction that he will perform well was well founded.

In the final survey, the top 7 performers in phase 2 will be facing the top 7 influential leaders namely (in alphabetical order), ABDUL HADI AWANG, AHMAD ZAHID HAMIDI, ANWAR IBRAHIM, LIM GUAN ENG, MAHATHIR MOHAMAD, MUHYIDDIN YASSIN (for supporters who want him to continue for another term) and NAJIB RAZAK.

LUCKY ME TO BE BORN IN PENANG & MALAYSIA

I grew up in a Chinese area with a healthy number of Hindu Malaysians. 200 steps from my house there was a Hindu and Chinese temple side by side. There are still there but much bigger now.

Not only I grew to be accustomed to the sounds and smell of the temple, I appreciate them too.

Another 300 steps was a Malay kampong where I study Quran reading. And among our close neighbours were Serani Christians.

When I stayed at Sunway some years ago, my condo fronted both a Hindu and Chinese temples. I look forward each evening to hear the temple bells.

Today my condo fronts a Surau. I like to time my 1 hour evening walk and workout to end just around Magrib. It is such a wonderful and peaceful feeling as the sun slips away and I end my walk with the Azan.

We Malaysians are so lucky. If we just open our senses to the sounds of Malaysia. With our minds and all our hearts.

OPEN LETTER TO THE MALAYSIAN MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT - PLEASE DO NOT SUCCUMB TO CRAB MENTALITY

Dear Malaysian Members of Parliament,

Peace,

Re: PLEASE DO NOT SUCCUMB TO CRAB MENTALITY

As we look forward to the reopening of the parliament, I have a huge request to ask of you. I believe I represent the thoughts, feelings and hopes of many Malaysians especially those not aligned to any political party or coalition.

I understand and respect that as politicians, getting or keeping power is key. Good citizens go into politics to gain power so they can do good and care for the rakyat. It is a very noble act. However, may I humbly suggest that for the time being, you skip the first part about power and go straight to doing good and caring for the rakyat.

How?

1.    AVOID THE CRAB MENTALITY.

To understand the Crab Mentality, one first need to get familiar with the Crab Theory or better known as the "crabs in a bucket phenomenon”. When you place crabs in a bucket or container, even if one can escape, it would not be able to because the other crabs will pull down the one trying.

This behaviour makes sure that no matter how hard anyone of them works and tries – none will be successful. That is the reason why a fisherman can leave the bucket without a cover and without worry as every time one crab tries to escape, the others will go out of their way to drag it back down.  

This zero-sum game of “if I can’t have it, neither can you” ensures nobody can lead effectively, and the rakyat suffer.

2.    WORK AS A TEAM

We need you to come together to fight COVID-19, build back the economy and relaunch Malaysia as a country of choice for business, travel, education and a wonderful place to live in.

We do not want you to get back into parliament to FIGHT EACH OTHER.

In the best possible way, we want you to use your talent, expertise, energy, spirit, organization and network to facilitate the vaccination of all eligible Malaysians and our brother- and sister-foreigners who make a living in our country. Each of you ensuring success within your own area of influence, location and network.

We are willing to wait till the next general election for the power struggle. At this point in time, whether we have the same team leading the nation or we change them with a new one is secondary to the need for a change in leadership behaviour.

3.    DO NOT FORCE A GENERAL ELECTION

Even if we achieve one hundred percent vaccination, I plead that we delay the general elections for as long as possible. Dealing and fighting Covid-19 is a work-in-progress. We do not know how the virus will mutate and fight back. Let us not celebrate too soon like we did after MCO 1. Let us wait it out for a while. Let us be sure. Give it time. Remember the Sabah state election. Let us learn from that mistake and experience.

As it seems that no political leader and his coalition can command a convincing majority in parliament today, any change will bring us back to square one – instability. Let us be honest and be in touch with ourselves. We are a nation that is yet to be mature enough to respect a minority government. We are prone to political crabbing and frogging. We will likely mess it up.

Let us stop, reflect and find new or alternative choices. At least till we are safe from COVID-19 and our economy is back on track. Perhaps we can try the Team Leadership approach be it via a MAGERAN-like option, UNITY GOVERNMENT or any other platform.

I hope you will take my request seriously. I feel that it is the best for the nation. It is also in line with the spirit of the YDP Agong’s recent decree. Last but not least, please try hard not to succumb to the CRAB MENTALITY and as you walk into parliament keep in heart the fifth principle of our Rukun Negara - KESOPANAN DAN KESUSILAAN.

WHO IS YOUR CHOICE AFTER TS MAHIADDIN YASSIN? - SURVEY RESULTS AND PHASE 2 ‘ELECTION’

Thank you to the 2253 respondents who shared their choices during the Phase – 1 Survey.

The top 5 candidates are (in alphabetical order) ANTHONY LOKE, GOBIND SINGH, KHAIRY JAMALUDDIN ABU BAKAR, NURUL IZZAH ANWAR and SHAFIE APDAL.

Interestingly, SYED SADDIQ although is still very young at 29, managed to be in the top ten.

Although Rafizi was not included in Phase - 1, I received overwhelming request through the social media, personal WhatsApp, phone calls and emails for him to be considered. I have strong confidence that he would have qualified and moved forward to Phase – 2 if he was in the list. As such, I will be including him in this Phase – 2 survey . While Rafizi has quit politics in 2019, perhaps he would reconsider should he move forward to the next round.

In the next round and final survey at Phase 3, the top performers from Phase 2 will be competing with the ‘Tier One’ leaders like (in alphabetical order) AHMAD ZAHID HAMIDI, ANWAR IBRAHIM, LIM GUAN ENG, MAHATHIR MOHAMAD, MAHIADDIN YASSIN (for supporters who want him to continue for another term) and NAJIB RAZAK.

 THE CURRENT SITUATION - by Dr Chandra Muzaffar

1) Most Malaysians are deeply concerned about their health at this moment.

2) This is why they are focussed upon getting vaccinated as soon as possible.

3) All segments of society should be totally mobilised towards achieving this crucial goal.

4) If 80% are immunised by October this year, Malaysian society as a whole will be free of the danger of

the coronavirus pandemic.

5) We would be able to return to normal in most spheres. This should be our objective.

6) To achieve this goal we should all work together as one family. There should be complete cohesion

and unity of purpose. ,

7) The present Muhyidddin Government has done relatively well in managing at least 6 dimensions of the

pandemic and its consequences

a) Keeping track of and monitoring the pandemic

b) Providing effective treatment to patients through hospital care

c) Curbing it to some extent the pandemic's anticipated dramatic spread

d) Implementing a mass immunisation programme that has become better organised and

more effective with the passage of time

e) Ensuring recovery from the pandemic for a significant portion of the infected.

f) Mitigating its socio-economic consequences through a range of aid packages and other

measures that have benefitted a sizeable segment of the population

8) Of course the government has made mistakes. It could have done better in various areas. As with many

other governments, it is learning as it grapples with the challenges emanating from the pandemic.

9) A fair and balanced evaluation of the government's performance would conclude that there is no

rational basis to seek the overthrow of the present government. In a situation like ours, one does not

change horses mid-stream.

10) The repercussions of any such move could be disastrous for the country, especially if one took

into account the larger picture.

11) What the government and King should do now is to request the independent committee established under the Emergency. Ordinance headed by former Chief Justice Tun Ariffin Zakaria to submit a comprehensive report on how the government and society as a whole have managed the pandemic so far

and the ensuing socio-economic crisis. The Report should be presented to parliament 2 0r 3 weeks before the scheduled end of the Emergency on 1st August 2021.

12) The report should be discussed by both the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara and the general public and their views should be presented to the government and the King. The King would then act on the advice of the government,

13) Such an approach will not only do justice to the people's sentiments but also incorporate inputs from both houses of parliament. It would adhere to established procedures and protocols while recognising the role of the Executive and the King.

This is a more mature way of handling the pandemic and its consequences than yielding to vested interests from the government or the opposition.

TO EDUCATE, DISCUSS AND PROMOTE THE EXCHANGE OF IDEAS

THE MALAYSIAN POLITICS AND PUBLIC ISSUES (MPPI) SERIES

– a zubedy-Taylor’s collaboration

The Malaysian Politics and Public Issues (MPPI) Series of talks and forums is an initiative by zubedy’s Unity & Harmony Mediators Movement (MEDIATORS) and Taylor’s School of Liberal Arts & Sciences (SLAS) to educate, discuss and promote the exchange of ideas on the nation’s politics and public issues.

The goal is to provide the basic foundation and framework by experts in the subject through well thought-out talks and also create a platform for dialogue, discourses and debates via public forums.

The series of talks and forums will cover key topics like the Malaysian Constitution, socio-political history, public policies, and specific topics like education, national culture, general elections, integration and economics.

TOPIC : The Making of The RUKUN NEGARA

" The Rukun Negara was proclaimed as the nation’s philosophy by the 4th Yang Di PertuanAgong (King) on the 31st August 1970, Malaysia’s Independence Day. It was anattempt to re-affirm and re-assert the nation’s fundamental aspirations and guiding principles following the ethnic riots of May 1969.

The Rukun Negara was formulated by a body known as the National Consultative Council comprising about 60 members made up of Federal Ministers, Opposition Leaders, religious and community representatives, academics, professionals, business people and trade unionists. The multi-ethnic NCC was chaired by the then Deputy Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak Hussein who later became the Prime Minister."
